In January 2017, I set off on a journey around the world with my brother, Jonathan, starting at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London (zero degrees longitude). My personal objective was to photograph the people, landscapes and wildlife as we circumnavigated the globe - returning four months later, once again to the prime meridian.

Knowing I was on a tight schedule, with flights booked in advance, and that I was unlikely to ever return again to some countries turned ‘Zero to Zero’ into a kind of photographic adventure – an odyssey. One that constantly challenged me, forcing me to ‘look harder’ and I like to think the discipline imposed by time constraints also improved my technique and approach to photography.

Over the course of 118 days, I travelled across 11 countries in four continents by plane, campervan, car, boat, bicycle and, of course, on foot. Even though I’ve trekked previously in Nepal, nothing quite prepared me for the assault on my senses on arrival in India, my first destination - made even more special by its diffuse light and vibrant colours.

In South East Asia I visited Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. With the help of a guide and driver, I could visit some of the most iconic places in the world and observe their contrasting cultures, many shaped by communism and conflict.

In the almost endless expanse of the Australian Outback, through to the temperate rainforests and volcanic terrain of New Zealand, I saw how the landscape has impacted upon indigenous people. And in the national parks of America, amongst the big vistas and vast skies of the south western United States, I was blessed with witnessing normally barren and unforgiving deserts in full spring bloom, teeming with wildlife.

A stopover in Iceland, a land forged by fire and ice, before returning to Greenwich four months after first setting off, helped to complete ‘the circle’.

Approaching nearly 300 pages and illustrated with over 400 photographs, the book is a comprehensive record of my global journey and hopefully of interest to anyone keen on travel photography.
