As I travelled from Uttar Pradesh into Rajasthan, I was often struck by the intense colours of the saris worn by Indian women, apparently created using a particular vegetable dye that resists fading. These four women were walking beside a busy road, carrying water to use for cooking. As they approached, I switched into ‘wedding photographer mode’ and asked our driver to pull over and persuade them to let me take their portrait.
