There was a promise of a warm and sunny day, so I took advantage of one of New York's free treats; a ride on the Staten Island ferry and a chance to see Manhattan and of course, the Statue of Liberty. It was misty and cool at first, creating an almost ethereal vision of she who ‘enlightens the world’ with her torch. By the time we returned on the next ferry, the statue was set against an industrial and commercial backdrop and Manhattan stood proud, brash and ‘in your face’.
