This scene in Laos is typical of how the salad crops are irrigated – all done by hand – heavy watering cans, repeatedly filled from a natural spring and then emptied along each row.

After a pre-dawn start, watching monks process through the streets of Luang Prabang, it was time to head out again to explore the immediate area. I was hoping for a repeat of the previous day, when the sun was low in the sky and the landscape still bathed in mist, but I was out of luck. Our guide took me deeper into the countryside, ‘off the beaten track’, so I could see local people working the land. This scene is typical of how the salad crops are irrigated – all done by hand – heavy watering cans, repeatedly filled from a natural spring and then emptied along each row.
